Katy and her husband Brad live in a 1910 log cabin in Pinedale with their Australian Shepherd, Argo.

Q: What is your favorite animal and why?
The turtle – it’s an ancient Swahili symbol for perseverance. I have one painted on my favorite canoe paddle as a reminder to work hard and be patient.

Q: How long have you lived out West?
Three years – After growing up in Texas, I went to university in Canada, did rangework in Utah and Nevada, and then moved to Oregon for graduate school. I ended up conducting research on land trusts in the Greater Yellowstone and never left!

Q: What’s your best tip for living in Sublette County?
Stockpile books and board games—the winters can be long, the power can be out, and you might live
somewhere without internet or TV!

Q: Describe a project you are particularly proud of completing?
Working with our partners on the Wildlife-Friendly Fencing Initiative has been truly rewarding. Although
the project has been a little outside of our normal “toolbox” of conservation easements, I hope that we
can make a real difference for wildlife and migration corridors.

Q: What attracted you to a career in conservation?
I have always been interested in the nexus of environmental issues and policy. I discovered the concept
of a land trust while researching different ways that farmers and ranchers stay in agriculture during
tough times-- and was hooked.

Q: What do you like best about your job?
I really enjoy the way that GRVLT staff members work together to get a project on the ground, a grant
out the door, or an event put together. There are always laughs, jokes, and a little mischief.

Q: What outdoor activities do you enjoy?
Canoe camping, skiing, sailing, fishing and backpacking—with my husband and the dog or solo!

Q: What is your favorite western movie and book?
My favorite western movie is probably “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,” while my favorite book is
“The Prophet” by Kahlil Gibran.

Q: In what community organizations or activities do you participate?
I recently joined the Pinedale Half Marathon Committee and the Board of Directors for the Pinedale Farmer's Market and also volunteer on the White Pine Ski Patrol.

Q: What are the top 3 things that you commonly add to your favorite foods?
Cilantro, Mustard, Cinnamon
